Identifying Suicide Risk in Jails

Updated: 6 days ago

As a leading cause of death for people under the age of 65, suicide risk increases for those within a jail or carceral setting, even for just one night. Justice-involved individuals who experience mental health disorders, including substance use disorder (SUD), are five times more likely to consider suicide than the general public.

In this Ask the Expert series, Dr. Lauren Weinstock discusses the importance of identifying suicide risk, specifically in jails, and how doing so would help us reduce rates and the impact of suicide.

Dr. Weinstock says, “Improving suicide risk identification could decrease the adverse impacts that suicide has on detainees, their families, correctional staff, and the community.”

Check out this short video featuring Dr. Weinstock from Brown University to learn more about the importance of NCHATS and why it is bridging the gap between healthcare and the criminal legal system.
