Ask the Expert: What are Recovery Management Checkups?

Recovery Management Checkups (RMC) are a structured, proactive intervention designed to support and monitor the progress of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) throughout their recovery journey. The RMC model offers an innovative approach to ensuring individuals receive ongoing care through regular checkups to help identify signs or risk of relapse early, barriers to continued treatment, and opportunities to re-engage individuals who may have disengaged from care.

In this Ask the Expert interview, researchers from Chestnut Health Systems discuss the RMC model, how it works, the latest research, and how it can make a real difference in supporting individuals with SUD through their recovery journey.

“Relative to services as usual, RMC across studies is associated with higher rates of initiating care, reduced time between relapse and readmission, and higher rates of engagement,” says Dr. Michael Dennis, Senior Research Psychologist; Lighthouse Institute Director, Chestnut Health Systems. “The approach includes motivational interviewing, commitment to change, risk reduction strategies, and consistent long-term, supportive relationships.”
