April is Alcohol Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness and increase understanding about Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and the serious consequences of excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol misuse significantly impacts individuals, families, and entire communities. Studies indicate that alcohol contributes to over 178,000 deaths annually¹ in the United States, making it one of the most significant preventable causes of death nationwide. Excessive alcohol use is also linked to seven different types of cancer and more than 200 different diseases and injury-related health conditions.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) provides a wealth of research-based resources on alcohol misuse, including Facts About Teen Drinking, NIAAA for Middle School, Alcohol and Your Brain: A Virtual Reality Experience, and a Kahoot! quiz about underage drinking. These materials are available for free, address a wide range of topics, and come in various languages.
Throughout Alcohol Awareness Month, you can also find information on the NIAAA website to learn more about NIAAA-supported research and initiatives.
